The Citation Audit Checklist: How to Find Every Mention of Your Business Online

Before you can fix your data, you have to find it. Use this professional checklist to audit your citations like a Local SEO pro.

The "Hidden" Internet

If you search for your business name on Google, you’ll see the first 10 or 20 mentions. You’ll see your website, your Facebook, your Yelp, and maybe a local news article. But for a Local SEO algorithm, the "Internet" is much bigger than the first page of results. There are thousands of "Data Silos" that Google crawls that you will never see in a standard search. These hidden silos contain old addresses, dead phone numbers, and misspelled names. They are the "Rot" at the foundation of your SEO. To fix them, you need to perform a Professional Citation Audit. In this final guide for our Citation series, we’re going to give you the exact checklist we use at Visibility Shifters to hunt down and document every single mention of a business online.

Phase 1: The "Search String" Audit

Don't just search for your name. You need to use "Search Operators" to force Google to show you the hidden data. Try these specific searches: 1. "Business Name" + "Phone Number": Finds every listing that has both. 2. "Phone Number" (without the name): This is the most powerful search. It finds listings where your name might be misspelled but the phone is correct. 3. "Old Address" + "Business Name": Finds "Ghost Listings" from your previous locations. 4. "Old Phone Number": Finds citation citation cleanup that have never been updated.

Phase 2: The "Big Five" Direct Audit

Manually visit and search within the internal search bars of: - Apple Maps (Use an iPhone or the Apple Business Connect portal). - Bing Places. - Yelp. - Facebook. - The Better Business Bureau (BBB). What to look for: Look for "Duplicate Clusters." Often, a business will have one verified listing and three "unclaimed" listings. You must document the URLs of all of them.

Phase 3: The Data Aggregator Scan

You can’t "search" the aggregators through Google. You have to use their specific lookup tools: - Data Axle: Use their "Express Update" search. - Neustar Localeze: Use their "Check My Business" tool. - Foursquare: Search their "Venues" database. If your business doesn't show up here, it means you have Zero Foundation Authority. If it shows up with wrong info, you have Negative Authority.

Phase 4: The "Niche & Local" Audit

Every industry has its own "Power Directories." - Lawyers: Avvo, Justia, Martindale. - Medical: Healthgrades, Zocdoc, WebMD. - Home Services: Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, Houzz. Search for your competitors on these sites. If they are there and you aren't, you are missing out on a "Relevance Signal" that Google uses to categorize your business.

Phase 5: The "Verification Status" Check

During your audit, you must categorize every citation into one of three buckets: 1. Verified & Correct: You have the login and the info is 100% right. 2. Unverified & Correct: The info is right, but you don't own the listing (high risk for sabotage!). 3. Unverified & Incorrect: The "Red Zone." These must be claimed and fixed immediately.

The "Audit Spreadsheet" Template

We recommend creating a spreadsheet with the following columns: - Directory Name - Listing URL - Status (Verified/Unverified) - N.A.P. Accuracy (Is it 100%?) - Notes (e.g., "Duplicate found at this address")

Why a Manual Audit is Better than a "Tool" Scan

There are many tools (like Yext or Moz Local) that will give you a "Instant Scan Report." While these are a good starting point, they only check about 50 sites. A manual audit by a specialist at Visibility Shifters checks for: - Semantic variations of your name. - Old phone numbers from "Call Tracking" experiments. - Rogue listings created by past marketing agencies. - "Identity Theft" listings from competitors. A tool sees data. A human sees a strategy.
