Disputing Bad Leads: How to Get Your Money Back from Google for Junk Calls

Google charged you $100 for a wrong number or a telemarketer. Learn how to "Dispute" the lead and get a full credit back to your account.

The "Junk Lead" Tax

The promise of Local Services Ads is simple: "Only pay for valid leads." But Google’s definition of "Valid" and yours might be different. - What if a customer calls asking for a service you don't provide? - What if it’s a wrong number? - What if it’s a telemarketer trying to sell you something? If you don't take action, Google will charge you for every one of those calls. In a high-cost niche, this can waste 20-30% of your marketing budget. In this guide, we’re going to show you the "Dispute Protocol" for reclaiming your money.

What Counts as a "Disputable" Lead?

Google will credit your account for: 1. Job Outside of Category: You are a plumber, but they called for roofing. 2. Location Outside of Area: They called from a city you don't serve. 3. Spam or Bot: It’s a recorded message or a "Phishing" attempt. 4. Wrong Number: They were trying to call a different business. 5. Not a Customer: It’s a job seeker or a salesperson. What does NOT count: - A customer who calls but thinks your price is too high. - A customer who calls but decides not to book. - A customer who hangs up after 30 seconds (if they stayed on the line, Google considers it a "Valid Interaction").

How to File a Dispute

Step 1: Log into the LSA Dashboard

Go to the "Leads" tab.

Step 2: Select the Specific Lead

Click on the call recording or the message.

Step 3: Click "Dispute"

You will be given a list of reasons. Pick the most accurate one.

Step 4: Provide "Evidence" (The Call Recording)

This is why you must have "Call Recording" turned on in your LSA settings. When you dispute a lead, a Google analyst will listen to the first 30-60 seconds of the call. - If the first thing the caller says is "Is this the Pizza Hut?", the analyst will grant the credit.

The 60-Day Deadline

You only have 60 days from the date of the call to file a dispute. If you wait longer, the charge is permanent.

The "Negative Signal" Risk

If you dispute every lead, Google will start to view you as a "High-Risk" advertiser. They might think you are trying to "Cheat the System" to get free leads. The Strategy: Only dispute leads that are clearly, objectively wrong. For the "Maybe" leads, it’s better to eat the cost and maintain your "High-Trust" status with Google.

Why Managed LSA is More Profitable

Most business owners are too busy to listen to 100 call recordings a month and file disputes. As a result, they leave thousands of dollars on the table. At Visibility Shifters, we perform Weekly Lead Audits. We listen to your LSA recordings, identify the junk leads, and handle the entire dispute process for you. For many of our clients, the money we "recover" from Google covers our entire management fee. Don't pay for mistakes. Get your money back.
