The Residential Trap: How to Report Illegal Home Businesses on Maps
Google has strict rules for businesses operating from home. Learn how to identify and report "Fake" physical locations that should be Service Area Businesses.
The "Storefront" Advantage
There are two types of local businesses on Google: 1. Storefront Businesses: You have a physical office where customers can visit (e.g., a Retail Store, a Lawyer’s office). 2. Service Area Businesses (SABs): You work at the customer's location (e.g., a Plumber, a Roofer). Storefront businesses get a massive Maps Maps Maps ranking advantage because they have a "Permanent Pin" on the map. SABs, who have to hide their address, struggle to rank as highly. Because of this, many SABs "Cheat." They use their home address, but they don't click the "Hide Address" button. They pretend to be a storefront business to get that ranking boost. This is a major violation of Google’s terms. In this guide, we’re going to show you how to identify these "Residential Spammers" and get them removed or converted to SABs.How to Spot a Residential Listing
1. The "Street View" Audit: Click on the address in Google Maps. Look at the Street View. Is it a house in a quiet neighborhood? Is it an apartment complex? 2. The "Signage" Check: Zoom in on the front door. Is there a professional, permanent sign? If not, it’s not a storefront. 3. The "Hours" Trap: They claim to be a storefront but their hours are "24/7." Very few physical offices are open 24/7. 4. No Interior Photos: They have 100 photos of work they’ve done, but zero photos of their "office" or a "reception area."Why This Matters to Your Business
If you pay \\\$5,000 a month in rent for a professional office in the city center, and you are being outranked by a guy working out of his spare bedroom 2 blocks away... you are being cheated. That person has zero overhead and is stealing your visibility by breaking Google’s rules. How to Report a Residential Violation
Step 1: The "Suggest an Edit"
Click "Suggest an Edit" -> "Close or Remove" -> "Not open to the public." - In your comments, write: "This is a residential home. There is no storefront, no signage, and no customers are seen at this location. This should be a Service Area Business."Step 2: The Photographic Proof
Take a photo of the house (from the public street) showing that there is no business sign. Upload this photo to the "Suggest an Edit" tool.Step 3: The Redressal Form
If the edit fails, move to the Business Redressal Form. Select "Fraudulent Location." Provide the Street View link and the evidence that the zoning for that address is residential-only.The "Home Business" Self-Check
